Pep Guardiola has admitted the demands of winning the treble did take a toll on his Manchester City players PBA
City were knocked out of the Carabao Cup and suffered rare back-to-back Premier League defeats prior to the recent international break PBA
They got back to winning ways with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Brighton on Saturday but Guardiola concedes there has been a natural drop in intensity after the remarkable end to last season PBA
The City manager said: “The treble had an influence on all of us, me included PBA
“So now we need to be there, close, month by month, to arrive in the final decision moments at the end of the season close to the opponents to try it again PBA
“I said many times, no-one has won four (Premier Leagues) in a row, never ever PBA
That shows how difficult it is, but now it’s important to be there, especially in the Champions League, qualify for the next round in this period and after we can just focus on the Premier League PBA
That is the target PBA
”City’s success has also brought increased expectations, particularly on Erling Haaland, who scored a remarkable 52 goals in an outstanding first season at the club last term PBA
By his extraordinary standards, the Norwegian’s recent three-game run without a goal constituted a barren spell but he ended that ‘drought’ with a clinical strike against the Seagulls PBA
“Yes the expectations are so high but he’s handled it really well,” said Guardiola PBA
“He knows he could have scored even more goals in the nine Premier League games we have played PBA
”Guardiola rested goalkeeper Ederson at the weekend following the Brazilian’s exertions during the international break PBA
Stefan Ortega took his place PBA
Guardiola said: “It was just for the fact that the travel from Brazil, it’s a long time PBA
Of course it’s happened many times but he played two games there and he was so so tired PBA
“Normally I like to play Ortega in the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup but we are out of the Carabao Cup, and sometimes it’s good for Eddy to rest a bit and refresh the mind PBA
”Ortega was pleased to get the opportunity and hopes there will be plenty more PBA
The German said: “I was excited when Pep told me that I was starting PBA
I’m always waiting to get a chance to get a bit more game time PBA
“Eddy is playing really well this season, he started really good, but I try to keep pushing him every day in training sessions PBA
“I think I deserved to start PBA
I’m ambitious so of course I’m not happy to sit on the bench, but we are in a team PBA
“Sometimes it is tough but this is my job – to be there when the team needs me and to keep pushing Eddy every day PBA

Mauricio Pochettino says Reece James’ “leadership” is why he handed him the Chelsea captaincy and defended the full-back after he picked up a suspension during his side’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa last month PBA
James, who did not play the match through injury, was suspended for Chelsea’s win over Burnley for aiming “abusive words” at a match official in the tunnel during the clash at Stamford Bridge and was ordered to pay a £90,000 fine PBA
But Pochettino has seen James’ leadership attributes and believes his actions were a mistake fuelled by frustration after he sustained a hamstring injury in August PBA
“Why did I choose him as captain? Because of his personality, his leadership, the respect he has from the club and his team-mates and he has my full respect also,” Pochettino said PBA
“Chelsea is in his DNA and when you see the squad he is not only for the present, he is for the future and in this moment Chelsea need someone like that PBA
“I think he was upset with the situation PBA
He was so committed with this project from the beginning, he felt really bad because he could not help the team PBA
“He made a mistake but he’s young and he can make mistakes PBA
He was really sorry about that situation and I don’t think it will be repeated PBA
“Even myself at Burnley I got a yellow card at half-time and I’m 51 years old; sometimes a young guy can make a mistake, he was frustrated because he could not help the team PBA
”Pochettino said that James’ fitness “will be assessed” ahead of Saturday’s clash against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, quashing reports the full-back suffered a setback in his recovery PBA
James has only started 22 times in the Premier League since January 2022 after a raft of injury issues PBA
Pochettino added: “He is much PBA better, he’s doing well and he’s progressing PBA
He’s not at his best and is not 100 per cent, but he is in a position to help the team at some point and he is close PBA
“What we are going to do is to avoid that (surgery) and we are building a strategy for him, to put him at his best and keep him at his best PBA
“We are confident (of this) PBA
Always confident PBA
”Mykhailo Mudryk scored his first competitive goal for Chelsea during their 2-0 victory over Fulham and he opened his account for Ukraine when he netted against Malta in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Tuesday PBA
Pochettino is happy with the winger’s progress after the 22-year-old struggled to adapt to life in west London following his big-money move from Shakhtar Donetsk in January PBA
He said: “We are so happy with him PBA
He’s changed a lot in the last three months since we first met him and he’s a completely different person and we can see how lovely, sensitive, smart and clever he is PBA
“It is so important to give confidence and when people trust they can be open and express their talent and Misha (Mudryk) is doing really well with his relationships with the team and club PBA
